Meghan Markle’s Nigerian Identity: Embracing a New Name and Cultural Heritage

Meghan Markle’s visit to Nigeria sparked significant interest and conversation, touching upon her newly embraced name and fashion selections. This brought attention to themes of heritage, expectations of public figures, and personal style.

In a recent gesture, Meghan penned a sincere letter to the Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, conveying her appreciation for the gracious reception and the traditional Yoruba name bestowed upon her during her and Prince Harry’s productive three-day visit in May 2024.

In her letter, Meghan expressed her deep humility and profound honor upon receiving the name Adetokunbo, acknowledging the trust placed in her to carry it with grace and dignity. She underscored the significance of the visit in strengthening her family’s bond with their heritage and eagerly anticipated the opportunity to return in the future.

The Press Secretary to the monarch disclosed that Meghan and Prince Harry’s visit encompassed royal receptions and exchanges of gifts, notably Royal beads, underscoring Meghan’s Nigerian ancestry, revealed through a genealogy test. Throughout her stay, Meghan actively engaged with women leaders, delving into discussions on mentorship and the professional hurdles faced by young women.

Nevertheless, Meghan’s sartorial selections during the visit triggered debates. Her array of five shoulder-baring dresses garnered attention for their elegance but also faced criticism for cultural insensitivity and appropriateness in the contexts of her appearances.

From a backless dress worn during a school visit, which drew rebuke for its perceived informality, to a strapless tube dress at a formal event, seen as a breach of local cultural norms, each attire choice ignited conversations regarding the conduct expected of public figures while overseas.

Despite the controversies surrounding her wardrobe, Meghan’s visit left a substantial imprint, particularly in spotlighting issues such as women’s mentorship and her embrace of Nigerian heritage.

As Meghan continues to navigate her public role, her choices in advocacy and personal style remain under intense scrutiny and generate widespread discussion.
